What Good Shall I Do This Day?

Many years ago, while touring Philadelphia, a dear friend, who I don’t get to see nearly as often as I would like, taught me about Benjamin Franklin’s daily routine. Aside from getting 7 solid hours of sleep, rising early, and dedicating a hard 8 hours to work daily, the one thing that was most profound to me was Franklin’s morning question: “What good shall I do this day?”

The organizations I serve reflect what I believe makes communities stronger: opportunities for children, a healthy business environment, education, culture, and a sense of responsibility to one another.

Whether through education, enrichment, basic needs, or simply giving a young person a better opportunity to succeed, if the work helps kids, I want to support it.

Strong local businesses create jobs, support families, generate opportunity, and provide much of the economic foundation that allows a community to invest in everything else that makes it a good place to live. I believe in advocating for the people who take risks, create something, employ others, and invest in the communities they call home.

I share this only for understanding. Being invited to serve these amazing organizations is a tremendous priviledge.

Doing good doesn’t make a good person.

The Vignelli Canon

The Vignelli Canon is a book by Italian designer Massimo Vignelli. It’s not a set of hard rules, but rather a glimpse into Vignelli’s design philosophy and the principles he believed were important for good design.

Personally, when approaching any opportunity or challenge, I use Vignelli’s philosophy on the “intangible” foundational concepts of semantics, syntactics, and pragmatics.

The Simple Sabotage Field Manual

The CIA’s Simple Sabotage Field Manual was created during World War II and details ways citizens living in occupied territories can disrupt enemy efforts by being inefficient and generally annoying in everyday tasks.

Declassified in 2008, this document can now be used as a guide to help people in the workforce avoid frustration and hinder productivity.

This is a great roadmap of what to not do when running a successful organization.
